20 Coloring Page Prompts That Actually Work (With Examples)

The single biggest reason AI coloring pages disappoint is vague prompts. "A unicorn" gets you a generic unicorn; "A baby unicorn with a flower crown sleeping in a meadow of giant daisies" gets you something framable. Here's the formula, plus 20 prompts you can copy.

The prompt formula

[Subject] + [doing what] + [where] + [extra detail]

That's it. The more of those four slots you fill, the better the page. Style and difficulty are separate dropdowns — keep them out of the prompt itself.

20 prompts to copy

For young kids (ages 3–6)

  1. A smiling sun wearing sunglasses on a beach with three palm trees
  2. A friendly dinosaur eating a giant ice cream cone
  3. A cat astronaut floating between four planets
  4. A baby owl reading a book inside a tree hollow
  5. A tractor full of pumpkins driving down a country road

For older kids (ages 7–12)

  1. A medieval knight riding a dragon over a castle with flags
  2. A robot chef cooking pancakes in a futuristic kitchen
  3. A mermaid mechanic fixing a submarine on the ocean floor
  4. A skateboarding fox doing a kickflip in an empty pool
  5. A wizard cat brewing a potion with floating ingredients

For adults (relaxation)

  1. An intricate mandala built from peacock feathers and lotus flowers
  2. A detailed Art Nouveau woman with flowers braided through long flowing hair
  3. A cozy cottage in a forest with mushrooms, vines, and a sleeping cat in the window
  4. A geometric stained glass owl with intricate feather patterns
  5. A botanical garden scene with twenty different flower species labeled

Special occasions

  1. A birthday cake with seven candles surrounded by balloons and confetti
  2. A Christmas tree with wrapped presents, stockings, and a sleeping cat underneath
  3. A jack-o-lantern field at night with three friendly ghosts and a full moon
  4. An Easter scene with a basket of decorated eggs and a baby bunny
  5. A Valentine's heart wreath made of intricate roses and butterflies

Three things to avoid

  • Negative prompts ("not scary", "without spiders") — AI handles these poorly. Just describe what you do want.
  • Style words inside the prompt ("in cartoon style") — use the style picker instead.
  • More than 30 words — past that, the AI starts ignoring details. Be specific but concise.
